Tentative diagnosis : Moist Eczema

This is called “Moist Eczema”. These are infected spots on the dog’s body with severe itching. These are basically protein allergies (Food origin). Most of the times these are developed due to proteins in the chicken, milk, eggs or some times due to vegetable protein like maize. Because of continuous itching the area will get infected with the bacteria and develop pyoderma if untreated.

Symptoms: Sudden onset of Moist, red, hairless patchy lesions most of the times single and sometimes in multiple places of do’s body with itching.

Recovery time: If started treating early they can heal in 10 days but if very severe and spread into large area it takes 3-4 weeks to heal completely.

Precautions to be taken: Clip the hair around the affected area with a scissors carefully and clean the wound with Betadine initially apply the creams or lotions prescribed by the vet along with the oral medication .

Answer from Vet:

Tentative diagnosis : Kennel cough
Vet Comments:

This is called “Kennel Cough”. This is a most common contagious respiratory disease in dogs. In this disease dog’s trachea, bronchi and brocheols are affected leading to severe cough.

Causes: It is mostly due to a bacteria called Borditella Bronchiseptica. Para Influenz and Adeno viruses can also cause this problem. This disease is transmitted from one dog to other dogs. Especially dogs kept in dog shelters, dog parks, dog shows are affected. And this can be transmitted from stray dogs also, while the dog is taken for walking on the roads.

Symptoms:Symptoms vary depending on the severity. They include frequent coughing with occasional vomiting (Phlegm), nasal discharges may or may not be present. In mild cases the dog may be eating and playing normally but in some cases if not treated that can lead to pneumonia and death.

Recovery Time:Generally dogs recover in 7-10 days after medication.

Precautions to be taken:Since this disease is most contagious do not allow the infected dog to play or stay with other healthy pets. Vaccinating the animals with Kennel cough vaccine every year can prevent this disease.
